A SOMEWHAT BRIEF AND BORING HISTORY OF THE ASCENT
Sometime around the year 2000, a couple of the senior pastors in Golden, Colorado began to meet weekly to pray for the city of Golden. They prayed for a powerful outpouring of God’s spirit and unity among the denominations. Over the years that weekly prayer time grew to encompass the majority of churches in Golden. In late Fall 2004, the youth directors in town began meeting weekly to share their hopes and dreams for the youth in the Golden area. Quickly they realized that God had given them all the same vision- one of unity. In February of 2005, they held a community wide Super Bowl party.
By late spring, the mission, vision, trail, name, and specific programming pieces had been determined. The individual youth leaders were meeting with senior pastors, volunteers and others to talk about how to function as a community-wide, youth ministry. They began casting the vision to the youth and trying to prepare them for the upcoming changes. During the summer, the volunteers began to go through some combined training. In August 2005, the various youth groups were “canceled” permanently, and “The Ascent” was born.
